Ludwig Mies van der Rohe back to designer   Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is an icon of the classical modern age. Like Le Corbusier, he is one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. After a stone-cutter lesson in his home town Aachen, he went to Berlin in 1905 and worked with Peter Behrens before going independent in 1913. After neo-classicist beginnings which were strongly influenced by Schinkel, Mies turned to the modern age in the 1920s. His buildings, for example, the Tugendhat in Bruenn (1929), for which he also designed the furniture, stands out due to its purity of form, its elegance of proportions and its perfection to detail. In 1938 Mies emigrated to the United States of America, where he took on a teaching position as a Professor at the IIT in Chicago. His most important works in later life were the Crow Hall in Chicago, the Seagram Building in New York, and the new National Gallery in Berlin, which was completed shortly before his death.   Designs:   L.
